While Marilyn Mitchell's father, actor [James] Irving Mitchell was working in Hollywood, his daughter Marilyn attended Lawlor Professional School in 1933-34. She was only four years old at the time, so she has little memory of it. She was nicknamed Skooter while at Lawlor. In 1935 the family left Hollywood and drove to her mother's hometown, Toledo, Ohio, in a Model A Ford. Marilyn recalls how scratchy the horsehair seats were. Her father went on to New York to pursue his career on Broadway, and Marilyn saw little of him after that. Her mother remarried and she and her brother, Jim, assumed their step-father's name. Along the way Marilyn became known as Marty. After graduating from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, Marilyn married Jack Born, a lawyer, moved to Michigan and raised her three children. Marilyn's brother Jim did not attend Lawlor.
