Gower Champion

Born: 22 June, 1921, Geneva, Illinois
Died: 25 August 1980, New York City, New York

Gower Champion attended Lawlor Professional School in the late 1930s. He formed a dance team in 1945 with Marjorie Belcher (Marjorie Bell) called “Gower & Bell.” When they married in 1947 they changed their team name to “Marge and Gower Champion.” They divorced in 1973. He was a singer, dancer, actor, and choreographer.

Diana Serra Cary (Peggy Montgomery) told Alan Simon of www.Mar-Ken.org: “Gower was an excellent student. He drilled me on algebra and helped me pass the course. He was so good with numbers. He dressed so well, better than the other students, very smartly and had different outfits, unlike most of us who wore the same clothes every day. I often wondered if he had wealthy parents. He was handsome and very talented. Unlike the other professional children, he worked by himself, always perfecting his dance routines. He worked against the wall, rehearsing by himself, and not doing routines developed by others, but innovating his own original movements, practicing them over and over to perfection.”
